City eyeing move for Spanish midfield star

Manchester City are lining up a multi-million pound swoop for Spanish midfielder Javi Martinez, having watched the player on seven occasions report the Daily Star

City boss Roberto Mancini is keen to bring some defensive cover into his squad and the newspaper claim Martinez is the player the Italian coach wants at the Etihad Stadium.

City officials watched Martinez play for Athletic Club against Manchester United in their Europa League tie, and have also been to San Mames on other occasions this season.

A product at the famed Lezama academy near Bilbao, Martinez has also been capped seven times by his country.

Martinez has also been linked with Manchester United in the past and Sir Alex Ferguson is a known admirer of the Basque midfielder, who can also operate in defence.

However Manchester City would be appear favourites for the player should he decide to leave the la liga side and the Daily Star claim they are readying a £25 million bid for the 24-year-old.
