The Mexican forward nicknamed “Hugol” began his career as a teenager when he signed for UNAM Pumas, the side of Mexico’s National University where he was studying for a degree in dentistry.

He spent five years with UNAM, winning two league titles before transferring to Atlético Madrid where he initially struggled to settle. He came good in the end finding his goalscoring form in the 1984-85 season as he helped Atlético to winning the Copa del Rey and Spanish Supercup as well as a second place league finish.

This form earned him a move across the city where he joined forces with Emilio Butragueño helping to secure five straight La Liga titles between 1986 and 1990 as he earned the title “Pentapichichi” after picking up the Pichichi award for the League’s top goalscorer no fewer than five times.

Hugol’s trademark was to perform a somersault goal celebration, a nod to his sister who competed as a gymnast at the 1976 Olympics.

His spectacular bicycle kick scored against Logrones in the 1987/88 season is still revered as one of the great Spanish League goals but it was the consistency with which he netted during seven seasons on the white side of the Spanish capital with a commendable goals to games ratio of 0.79

In the 1989-90 season Sánchez equalled Telmo Zarra’s 1950-51 record of 38 goals leading many to consider him the greatest Mexican footballer ever.
