The most prominent member of the generation of players known as la Quinta del Buitre, Emilio Butragueño spearheaded the lethal Madrid strikeforce of the late 1980’s making his debut on 5 February 1984 against Cádiz.

Butragueño broke into the side during a period of regression after the success of the 1970’s. A Madridsta by birth he formed an effective strike partnership with Mexican Hugo Sanchez.

Known as an intelligent forward, he was recognised for his exceptional positional play and his predatory awareness as he rarely scored from outside the penalty area.

In 1986 Butragueño became the first player since Eusebio to score four goals in a World Cup finals match as Spain ran out 5-1 winners over Denmark.

He scored 123 goals in 341 appearances for Real winning six league titles including five in a row and two Copa del Reys as well as back to back UEFA Cup wins in 1985 and 1986.

With the emergence of Raúl, Butragueño retired in 1995 and would later replace former teammate Jorge Valdano as Real’s director of football.
