1 – LIONEL MESSI

Undoubtedly the best player in the world right now, the Barça talisman joined from local club Newell’s Old Boys in 2000 at the age of 13.

When asked about his decision to leave Santa Fe, Messi said “It wasn’t difficult for me to move to Barcelona because I knew I had to.” Born with a growth hormone deficiency he couldn’t afford the medical treatment and despite widespread interest in the Argentine prodigy; Barcelona were the only side to offer to pay for the treatment he desperately needed.

On 16th October 2004 Messi made his debut in a 1-0 win over local rivals Espanyol at the Olympic Stadium. He scored his first goal later that season against Albacete two months before his 18th birthday, at the time making him the club’s youngest league goalscorer.

Messi’s phenomenal dribbling ability has mesmerised fans and pundits throughout the world as he continues to singlehandedly tear the best defences in the world apart.

In addition to his five La Liga winner’s medals and three Champions League wins he has also won a stack of individual awards. He is the first player since Michel Platini to win three consecutive Ballons d’Or and recently became Barcelona’s all time top goalscorer with 235 goals in all competitions.

On 7th March Messi became the first player to score five goals in a Champions League match and still just 24 years old we can only expect more of the same from a player now considered by many to be the greatest in the game’s history.
