After impressing coach Johan Cruyff during a Cup Winners’ Cup semi-final clash with Barcelona, the Bulgarian forward nicknamed “El Pistolero” signed for the club in 1990. He played alongside Pep Guardiola in the famous “dream team” of the early to mid nineties.

Stoichkov had won the European Golden Boot in his last season with CSKA Sofia as he scored 38 goals in 30 games. Known for his fiery temper, Stoichkov was given a two month suspension in his first season in Spain after stamping on a referee’s foot, he went on to redeem himself by netting 21 times, helping the side to their first league title since 1985.

The pacey forward was the star of the Bulgarian side that reached the semi-finals of the 1994 World Cup after famously coming from behind to eliminate Germany in the quarter finals.

Known as an aggressive competitor, Stoichkov scored an impressive 76 league goals in his five year spell in Catalonia as he helped the side to four consecutive league titles and won the European Cup in the 1992 season.
