3 – LÁSZLÓ KUBALA

Soon after Hungary became a Communist state in 1949 Kubala fled his homeland in the back of a van. He briefly played for Pro Patria in Italy, later that year he agreed to represent Torino in a friendly against Benfica but pulled out when his son became ill. On the flight back from Lisbon the plane carrying the team crashed into the Superga hills killing everyone on board.

Kubala joined Barcelona in 1951, renowned for his dribbling ability Kubala tormented defences during a ten year spell with the Catalan club and amassing 274 goals in 345 appearances.

He scored an impressive 26 goals in his first season with the side, including seven goals in a 9-0 win over Sporting Gijón which remains a La Liga record.

The Hungarian forward lifted four league titles and five Copa del Reys as well as two Fairs Cups before departing for local rivals Espanyol.
