1 – ALFREDO DI STÉFANO

Di Stéfano joined the club in 1953 in spectacular fashion, having already agreed to join bitter rivals Barcelona without the consent of his parent club Columbian side Millonarios.

The Spanish Football Federation refused to recognise the deal and as negotiations over a new agreement stalled in stepped Real Madrid president Santiago Bernabéu who persuaded Di Stéfano to join them instead.

It would prove to be an inspired move as the Argentine-born goal machine, widely considered one of the best forwards to ever live would score a whopping 307 goals in his 397 appearances for the side.

He scored in five consecutive European Cup finals, including a hat trick in the famous 7-3 demolition of Eintracht Frankfurt in 1960, which still ranks as one of the greatest football matches ever played.

His 49 goals in 58 European matches stood as a record until 2005 when it was surpassed by Raúl.

Perhaps more significantly, Di Stéfano’s emergence coincided with the end of a barren spell for the Spanish giants who were approaching two decades without a league title when they lured him to the then Nuevo Estadio Chamartín.

With Di Stéfano in the side, Real went on to win eight league titles in addition to their five European Cup triumphs. He was named President of Honour of Real Madrid in November 2000.
