Alcorcon fairytale continues as Valladolid provide the final hurdle: Liga Adelante Play-Offs


Alcorcon moved one step closer to a fairytale promotion to the Spanish top flight, after 0-0 draw at Santo Domingo gave them the edge over Hercules on Sunday evening.

The hosts proved resolute in defence and knew a clean sheet would be enough tp take them through to the final following their 1-1 draw in the first leg. With the onus firmly on Hercules to break the deadlock, it was the visitors who proved more positive in the first half. Despite this, it was Alcorcon who created the best chances.

The second-half was a tense affair with both side physically drained by their earlier exertions. Despite a number a further chances the score remained in deadlock and their were jubilant scenes at the final whistle as Alcorcon moved to within two game of promotion to the Primera Division for the first time in history.

In the other semi-final, Valladolid triumphed after a hard-fought 3-0 victory over Cordoba – a scoreline that flattered the hosts somewhat after a spirited display from the visitors.

It was Cordoba who began the game brighter against a nervy home side and should have been ahead themselves before Oscar finally fired Valladolid ahead 10 minutes into the second half.

The Andaluz side spurned a number of chances to pull level and were punished when Guerra doubled the hosts’ advantage in the 65th minute. Despite falling further behind, Cordoba continued to threaten however they were unable to find a way back into the game and Jofre finally ended any resistance when he made it 3-0 with two minutes remaining.
