7 – JOHAN CRUYFF

The Dutchman joined Barça in 1974 and quickly won the hearts of Barcelonistas when he claimed he chose them over their Madrid rivals because he couldn’t play for a club associated with dictator Francisco Franco

He helped the side to winning the league title in his first season, scoring 16 goals in the process and lifted the Copa del Rey in 1978 before departing for the US.

Throughout his career, Cruyff was synonymous with total football, with exceptional technique, pace, passing and dribbling ability he was the complete footballer and he drifted into different positions across the front line with devastating effect.

Cruyff scored one of the greatest goals ever seen in a Spanish League match against Atlético Madrid as he leapt to meet a hanging cross, twisting his body in mid-air to acrobatically back heel the ball past goalkeeper Miguel Reina. It is known as the “phantom goal”.

In his five seasons with Barcelona he made 143 appearances scoring 48 goals and he made 48 appearances as an integral part of the great Dutch national side of the 1970s. Holland never lost a game in which he scored.
